Quick Answer: The letters are the name abbreviation of the designer.
Detailed Answer: You might be confused as to why our collections have two letters at the end of their name (e.g. American Civil War–PD). Or you might see two similar collections (Seven Years War–PD & Seven Years War–VB), and ask how they differ.
The answer is simple: WoFun collaborates with different illustrators, so the letters represent their name abbreviation. In this article, we’ll explore how their design style differs, the organizational variances in basing (individual or group bases), and the types of games each figurine set suits (tactical/skirmish wargaming).
Why collaborate?
Aside from aiming to provide accessible and ready-to-play miniatures for everyone, WoFun's primary goal is to offer historically accurate representations of army regiments. This involves meticulous research into uniforms, weapons, and overall arrangement.
Truth is, achieving the goal of creating over 50,000 historically accurate miniatures, and more than 50 collections in less than 5 years on our own was simply not feasible. To realize WoFun goals, we partnered with historical enthusiasts who possess a skill (and passion) for drawing. And while the actual drawing of historically accurate figurines is indeed a significant aspect, it represents only a fraction of the overall challenge.
Don’t get me wrong, it still requires a tremendous amount of time, amazing skills, and effort. However, it constitutes just a part of the process. The large part lies hidden in the tens of thousands of hours that our collaborators have put (through a lifelong of studying history) in researching books, articles, and any other piece of information they could put their hand of. In this vein, we also want to extend warm thanks to our collaborators for their hard work and dedication over the last 4 years. WoFun couldn't be what it is today without your contributions!
Now, without further ado, let's delve into explaining the main differences below.
WoF editions
artist name: WoFun
for use in: tactical wargaming
illustration style: individual figurines with a frontal perspective, the face and reverse side are different
base organization: multiple individual figurines, on a base
The WoF editions are designed in-house, and were the first collections released by WoFun. The majority were illustrated in 2019 by Lucian, WoFun’s founder, during the Kickstarter campaign - “Bring History into Your Home”. They rank as the second most numerous on our site, spanning a wide range of historical periods.
PD editions
artist name: Peter Dennis
for use in: tactical wargaming
illustration style: groups of figurines with a frontal perspective, the face and back side are different
base organization: multiple groups of figurines, on a base
The PD editions stand as the most numerous and popular collections in our assortment, totaling over 25 editions. In addition to soldier collections, PD editions include multiple scenery collections, a fantasy collection, and a naval collection. The collaboration between WoFun and Peter Dennis commenced in May 2020.
VB editions
artist name: Vyacheslav Batalov
for use in: historical skirmish wargaming
illustration style: individual figurines with a lateral view, the face and back side are similar
base organization: individual figurines, on individual bases
Let me tell you a secret. If you are looking for some historical skirmish action, Vyacheslav is the man to go! His collections span significant historical periods such as the Dark Ages, the Crusades, or the Seven Years’ War. Vyacheslav's artistic technique draws inspiration from the traditional style used in painting flat metal figurines. The collaboration between WoFun and Vyacheslav began in August 2020.
GS editions
artist name: George Seryapow
for use in: fantasy skirmish wargaming
illustration style: individual figurines, a lateral view, the face and back side are different
base organization: individual figurines, on individual bases
While VB editions focus on skirmish historical figurines, GS editions center on skirmish fantasy figurines. George’s vivid and cartoonish style creates an immersive experience in the fantasy realms, perfectly complementing the illustrated themes. Collaboration between WoFun and Seryapow started in in September 2021.
KC editions
artist name: Darius Buraczewski
for use in: tactical wargaming
illustration style: groups of figurines, a frontal perspective, the face and back side are different
base organization: multiple groups of figurines, on a base
Kevin Cunningham is a long-time supporter of WoFun. In 2022, in collaboration with Darius they created the Maratha collection, featuring Sikh, Indian, and Muslim armies. Honestly, we think the colors of the figurines are amazing and the Elephant regiments are really cool. But don’t take our word for it, take a look at the pictures below and see for yourself!
JP editions
artist name: Jose Maria Pujalte Mora
for use in: tactical wargaming
illustration style: groups of figurines, a frontal perspective, the face and back side are different
base organization: multiple groups of figurines, on a base
Collaboration for the Spanish-Aztec Wars collection between WoFun and Jose Maria started in February 2022. His vivid and colorful style perfectly complements the lively décor worn by the Aztec tribes. The figurines are organized similarly to the PD collection.
SC editions
artist name: Sérgio Veludo Coelho
for use in: tactical wargaming
illustration style: groups of figurines, a frontal perspective, the face and back side are different
base organization: multiple groups of figurines, on a base
Before Sergio reached out to us in July 2023, the War of the Two Brothers period was missing from our collection. Then, it struck us: who could better illustrate this pivotal moment in Portuguese history, than a passionate history teacher from Portugal? Thus, we embarked on the project! Sergio’s artistic style complements WoF's, but the organization of individual figurines is switched for groups.
FR editions
artist name: Florian Richter
for use in: naval wargaming
illustration style: individual ships, a lateral view, the face and back sides are different
base organization: individual ships on individual bases
Florian Richter, with a little help from Peter Dennis, has put together
a beautiful collection of over 70 ships which, with minor work
using a craft knife and glue, can form line of battle once again.Florian Richter lives in the great port city of Hamburg, Germany where he is perfectly placed to indulge his fascination for ships.
SS editions
artist name: Gianpaolo Bistulfi
for use in: naval/tactical wargaming
illustration style: groups of figurines, a frontal perspective, the face and back sides are similar
base organization: individual / group figurines on individual bases
The Soldiers Shop editions primarily depict naval conflicts and were designed by Gianpaolo Bistulfi. Gianpaolo is dedicated to promoting the world of flat minis in Italy. He has authored articles for specialized magazines in Italy, Germany, and England, and has collaborated on the publication of books by providing photos of his extensive collection of flat miniatures. His collection is widely regarded as one of the most important in the world.
10mm PD editions
artist name: Peter Dennis & Mirko Bruner
for use in: tactical wargaming
illustration style: groups of figurines, a frontal perspective, the face and back side are different
base organization: multiple groups of figurines, on a base
The 10mm collections are illustrated by Peter Dennis and edited by Mirko Bruner. Peter draws the figurines for the 28mm scale, with Mirko then editing Peter’s drawings to create larger groups of characters suited for the 10mm scale. In addition to his credit in creating the 10mm collections, Mirko is a long-time supporter and collaborator of WoFun, offering valuable advice and assistance across various projects.
Conclusion
We hope this article provides a clearer understanding of how our collections work, their differences, and gives due credit to the talented artists behind them.
